What Do You Mean By Nursing Pads?
A nursing pad or breast pad is a cloth worn against the nipple and breast by the breastfeeding mother to absorb any milk that leaks between feedings. It is placed between the bra and the breast. Change the pad when wetness is observed, it will keep the nipple clean and dry.
Different Types Of Nursing Pads
Nursing pads available in different shapes ,sizes and types. They can be contoured to the shape of one's breast or have tape to hold on the breast. Mainly the types of nursing pads are disposable, reusable, homemade, silicone and hydrogel.
Disposable Nursing Pads
Disposable nursing pads are for only single use. Pads have a lining of plastic inside them to prevent leakage. They are considered best for travel since they do not need to be washed and convenient also. Disposable pads retain moisture when worn for a long period and can cause nipple soreness. So it is advised to change them frequently. They are costly in the long run and not eco friendly also.
Reusable Nursing Pads
They are eco-friendly and cheap in the long run. These pads are washable both by hand or machine. However, it is important that one has bought multiple pads when the soiled ones are in laundry. However, some women complained that reusable nursing pads often shift.
Homemade Nursing Pads
Nursing pads can also be made at home using disposable sanitary napkins or diapers. They are made from soft fabric, handkerchief or cotton material. Homemade nursing pads are cut out in a circular shape and a few layers should be stitched together to make them leak proof. Avoid using artificial material and use soft cotton fabrics so it is not irritable to skin.
Silicone Nursing Pads
Silicone nursing pads are made from medical grade soft silicone. They are not absorbent, but put gentle pressure on the breast. They have a sticky surface that adheres directly to the breast. They can be easily worn with or without a bra and are quite thin. Also be worn under sheer evening gowns and swimwear. However, s silicone nursing pads has problem of irritability due to increased skin sensitivity around the breast area during postpartum and breastfeeding.
Hydrogel nursing pads are not used for preventing leakage, used to heal irritation and soreness around the nipple. These pads are stored in a freezer and later used to provide relief to the breasts.
Manual To Use Breast Pad
Prepare your nipple
Ensure that the area around the nipple is bacteria free and dry because using breast pad. If your nipples are irritated, apply nipple cream before your breast pad.
Remove Adhesive Backing
Use clean hands to remove pads from their packaging, and carefully peel off the adhesive backing.
Position Nipple Centrally
To maximize the absorbency of breast pad and avoid leaks, center your nipple on the pad.
Place Adhesive Against Bra
Bring your bra up into place toward your breast and press the adhesive side of the pad into the bra part. When you position your bra fully , re-adjust the pad if it is not in the proper position.
Change When Wet
When your pad becomes moist from milk leakage, remove it and discard or wash according to type of pad to avoid chance of infection or irritation. Change the bra with fresh one
Wet Nipple If Pad Gets Wet
If your breast pad becomes stuck to your nipple, gently apply a little moisture to it. Avoid pulling it becomes painful and uncomfortable.
